Black History Month is a time to reflect, educate and explore what this year’s national theme, Standing Firm in Power and Pride, means to Black Students and Staff at Royal Holloway.
This year, Black History Month 2025 is led by your Black & Global Majority Students Community Officer, Clara Unegbu and ACS: African-Caribbean Society. To join their communities, check out their profiles on the RHSU website.
This year’s theme, Standing Firm in Power and Pride, pays tribute to the incredible activism and leadership in the civil rights movement and social movements driven by the black community as well as celebrates black excellence and the collective strength of those who stood firm in power and pride.
The University and SU are coming together this month, with teams such as the Black & Global Majority Staff Network, Hall Life, and ALS hosting events to unite students and staff. Black History Month is not only a time of celebration and remembrance, but also a call to action for the University and SU to ensure that Black voices and lived experiences inform procedures and policies, challenge institutional racism, and help embed an inclusive education. Further details on this call to action will be published on the RHSU website later in the academic year.
On campus, we have a range of fun and educational events taking place throughout the month. We’re also celebrating the incredible talent of the Black community at Royal Holloway with the return of our Black Creativity Showcase on Monday 20 October 2025.
The SU venue will be transformed into a cosy, intimate venue for a chilled evening of performances from Students and Staff. Student poems and artwork will fill the space, and we’ll hear live poetry readings and musical performances.
If you are a Black Student who would like to take part in the showcase, please complete this form or check out more information here. We can’t wait to celebrate and reflect with you!
