Come In Your Kit: Be Mindful Of Others

With one of the most popular nights of the term approaching (CIYK), VP Sport Dom Brown would like to remind you to be respectful of the community around you.

Next Wednesday 9 October at the SU, we’re hosting one of the most popular function nights on campus, especially for sports clubs. It is the night out that coincides with the first BUCS fixtures of the year – Come in Your Kit (CIYK).

CIYK is an event where we celebrate sports clubs and the sporting community. The event is always full of good vibes, and we just want to make sure that this continues throughout the night and that everyone is mindful of others.

So, what's the deal?

We recognise that clubs and teams will often want to hold socials beforehand. Please remember that you are part of a community, and should aim to be respectful of neighbours and other residents of campus, Egham and Engelfield Green. Noise has a significant negative impact on people – particularly late at night and in the middle of the week.

In addition to this, a lot of you will likely be wearing Royal Holloway branding in large groups, which makes you easily identifiable as students. Be respectful and represent the Bears in the best possible way!

This stretches to after the event as well. In many cases, clubs will travel home together in groups, but this means that noise levels can rise quickly. Just have a think about the best way to travel home safely. If you’ll be walking home, then be aware of noise levels. If you live far away, then using our Night Bus might be the best way forward – check out everything there is to know about our Night Bus here. The last thing we all want to see are complaints and incidents coming in the days after CIYK as a result of people pushing it too far. So please, let’s be smart!

At the end of the day, all you have to consider are these things:

  • Have inclusive, welcoming and fun socials
  • Be respectful of the local community
  • Make any close neighbours aware of any events you are having
  • Represent Royal Holloway appropriately
  • If you want space in Medicine email
  • Think about safe and appropriate ways to get home, notably the night bus

Use our venues for your socials!

As a side note, it’s always worth remembering that we can also support you with housing your socials by booking spaces at Medicine and The Packhorse. It’s only a short walk to the SU, and if you speak to us in advance, we can make sure private areas are reserved.

Other than that, make sure you have a fantastic night, look after yourselves and others, and if you have a fixture or competition that Wednesday, then good luck!

If you have any questions or need any help please feel free to contact me and I will be happy to help.

See you there!
