Coronavirus Update - 17 March

We want to share our plans with students regarding changes to Students’ Union services in light of the coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic.

Students’ Union Building

From midday on Tuesday 17 March 2020, the Students’ Union building will be closed until further notice.

Union Helpdesk

From midday on Tuesday 17 March 2020, the Students’ Union Helpdesk will be closed until further notice. You can contact our team on with any immediate enquiries you have related to our services.

Advice Centre

From midday on Tuesday 17 March 2020, the Advice Centre will cease all face-to-face appointments. However, it is critical that you are still able to access our advice services and we will continue to deliver this digitally through our website, by email, and via phone.

We are currently updating our advice webpages with additional content and will provide detailed information on the Advice Centre webpage on how to book a virtual appointment.

Union Shop

We want to reassure students that in the event of a campus closure, the Union Shop will remain open to students that live on site. We are in regular contact with our suppliers and are confident that our supply chain is resilient, while a staffing plan has been developed to ensure you will continue to receive the high quality you expect from us.

During the Easter break, the opening hours of the shop will be: 08:00 – 18:00; current opening hours remain unaffected.

We have upgraded our cleaning regime, providing additional guidance and facilities to our staff which includes asking them to wash their hands every 20 minutes, and we are also looking to source additional hand sanitiser stations to be placed around the store.

We will also be moving to a full cashless service from Friday 20 March 2020, meaning only debit/credit/College card payments will be accepted. We understand that not everyone has access to a bank card and encourage you to use your College card in this instance.

We’re also exploring the potential of an ‘access hour’ for individuals with accessibility requirements, and those deemed at higher risk of serious illness from Covid-19. We will provide an update on this as soon as there are any developments.

Tommy’s Kitchen

From midday on Tuesday 17 March 2020, Tommy’s Kitchen will be closed until further notice.

The Packhorse

From midday on Tuesday 17 March 2020, The Packhorse will be closed until further notice.

From midday on Tuesday 17 March 2020, Medicine will be closed until further notice.

Union Bus

As of midday on Tuesday 17 March 2020, the Union Bus service has been cancelled and cannot be booked until further notice.

Sabbatical Officers

Our five Sabbatical Officers are all now working remotely and will continue to lobby on behalf of all students at Royal Holloway. If you have any questions for them, please contact them via email or through their RHSU social media accounts on Facebook, Instagram, or Twitter.

Student Groups

All BUCS competitions, sporting and non-sporting, will be suspended from 23:59 on Tuesday 17 March 2020 until 09:00 on Wednesday 1 April 2020. As part of the BUCS programme, this suspension will extend to all LUSL fixtures. At present, there are over 1500 fixtures still scheduled to take place this season and BUCS staff are working hard to outline a number of options in relation to bringing all competitions to a conclusion following the suspension.

Royal Holloway Sport have taken the decision to cancel any remaining club training bookings for this academic year.

All societies have been contacted regarding show/rehearsal space.

While all groups are autonomous, we advise that they follow government advice around contact and cancel all training or planned group meetings.

Student Media

Our three media outlets have been contacted directly regarding access to facilities and contingency plans are being put in place to allow Insanity Radio 103.2FM to continue to broadcast remotely.

We continue to work closely with the University regarding our response to Covid-19 and will provide guidance as appropriate through our social media channels and via our website.

It is important that you continue to follow the government’s advice with regard to handwashing, travel and the symptoms and continue to monitor the student intranet and University social media for updates from the College.
