In Term One the Students’ Union ran a survey to learn more about the ways the cost-of-living crisis is impacting current Royal Holloway students. It’s time to share the results!

About the project

In Term One, the Students’ Union launched the Cost-of-Living Survey to get your feedback on how the ongoing cost-of-living crisis is impacting your student experience at Royal Holloway.  The survey covered different topics like general living costs, financial support at Royal Holloway, student spending habits on campus and during late-night events, as well as the ways it’s affected your education and ability to engage with the Students’ Union.

Many of these questions also linked up with ongoing areas of work the Sabbatical Officers are tackling this year with their individual Priority 8 action plans. The results will help shape the further work the Officers and the Students’ Union can do this academic year in these areas and make student life better at Royal Holloway.

846 students across all year groups participated and we really appreciate the time you all took to provide insight into your different experiences while studying. We have shared the results in the infographics below!

The results

846 students across all year groups participated in the survey!

Students told us about their work patterns, and whether they took out any loans to help subsidise their studies at Royal Holloway.

We asked students to tell us about the ways the cost-of-living crisis has impacted various elements of their student experience.

Royal Holloway offers a range of financial support services. We asked students which ones they’ve used, how satisfied they were, and how the University and Students’ Union can improve the way information about financial support is shared.

Students across the UK are cutting back on socialising and non-essential spending, and Royal Holloway students are no exception. We looked at how the cost-of-living crisis is impacting students’ ability to engage with the Students’ Union and enjoy the social side of university life.

We also asked a series of questions to learn more about student spending habits in University commercial outlets, and students’ interest in implementing a joint loyalty card scheme between the Students’ Union and the University.

We asked students how the cost-of-living crisis is affecting their academic experience and what could make things better. We also explored how students are using AI in their studies, and whether students know about, use, and are satisfied with free period products on campus.

Finally, the Students’ Union wanted to understand what students expected university life to be like, and how that compares to their current reality. We asked students to rank different parts of their student experience and tell us whether they turned out to be more expensive, about right, or cheaper than they expected.

next steps

We have shared the full survey results with University and Students’ Union stakeholders, and we are in the process of creating a list of recommendations to help support Royal Holloway students during the cost-of-living crisis while studying.

These recommendations will be shared with the wider student body once they have been completed, and the Sabbatical Officers will use your feedback to help drive their Priority 8 work this term and implement positive change for current and prospective Royal Holloway students.
