Student Leader Conference.

Welcome to the Student Leadership Conference! Whether you’re a newly elected student group committee member, community officer, or academic rep, this two-day conference will equip you with all the training you’ll need as you enter your new leadership role in September!

We have a whole range of sessions including networking opportunities, intro to EDI, campaigning, risk assessment training for all student leaders as well as role specific sessions including student group essentials, academic rep and community officer inductions and loads more! These are led by a variety of different people such as SU staff members, University staff members and some student-led sessions too!

Not only will there be a variety of sessions for you to get involved in, on day one you can enjoy a pizza lunch as you network with your fellow student leaders and at the end of day two there will also be a BBQ social at the Packhorse to end the conference!

When Tuesday 2 – Wednesday 3 June 2026. Registration from 9:15 on Tuesday 2 June or any time before your first session begins.
Where : On arrival, head to the registration area in the SU venue to sign in and grab your freebies and refreshments.

Why do I need to attend?

There are training sessions that are essential to your role as a student leader. Not only this, it’s a fantastic opportunity to learn more about how you can be successful in your role, how to support your members and advocate for students. You’ll also be able to network with fellow student leaders and chat to various SU and University staff members.

You’ll also gain lots of skills that will look great on your CV!

Who is the conference for?

This conference is available to student leaders only. A student leader is any current student who will be a Committee Member, Course Rep, Senior Course Rep, Department Rep, Faculty Rep or Community Officer for 2026/2027.

We expect at least one committee member from each student group to attend the compulsory sessions and this will be monitored to ensure that all groups are adequately trained to fulfil their activities for the year ahead.

Are any of the session’s mandatory?

There are a few mandatory sessions depending on your leadership role:

  • Course and Senior Course Reps must attend: Academic Rep induction, SSAM and Collecting Feedback and Closing the Feedback Loop
  • Department Reps must attend: Faculty & Department Rep Training & Academic Communities
  • Faculty Reps must attend: Faculty & Department Rep Training
  • Community Officers must attend: Community Officer Induction and Running a Campaign training, Claiming your money back using Basecone, Accessible Social Media Workshop.
  • Community Officers must attend: Community Officer Induction and Running a Campaign training, Claiming your money back using Basecone, Accessible Social Media Workshop.
    • At least one committee member must attend Student Group Essentials and Community, Culture and Conduct
    • Treasurers must attend Treasurer Training (and are recommended to attend Claiming your money back using Basecone
    • Sports Club Presidents must attend Intro to Sport
    • Social Secretaries recommended to go to events and fundraising

I’m not sure what sessions I want to attend definitely yet, what should I do?

Don’t worry! Make sure you register for the conference using the sign up buttons and ensure you register for any that are mandatory using the expression of interest form. If you have an idea of which other sessions you’d like to attend then let us know through the same form.

If you change your mind on the day, just feel free to attend whichever of those you like, just make sure someone is attending the mandatory sessions if you’re on a student group committee.

Who is running the conference?

The conference is being organised by the Student Opportunities and Student Voice team at the Students’ Union! But there’s lots of other experts coming to deliver sessions across both the SU and the University.

Is there a cost?

No, it’s completely free (including refreshments, pizza and BBQ!).

I can’t attend, what should I do?

Please get in touch with your relevant staff support (Student Groups: email studentopportunities@su.rhul.ac.uk ; Academic Reps & Community Officers: email voice@su.rhul.ac.uk.voice@su.rhul.ac.uk) and they will inform you of the next steps that must be completed in order to continue in your role.
