Committee Cafés: Supporting Societies & Sports Clubs

One of my manifesto aims when running to be your VP Societies & Sport was to improve the support available for committee members. A way of achieving this was by facilitating a space for committee members to support each other, peer to peer.

I am excited to announce that the brand-new Committee Cafés are up and running!

What do committee members do?

Committee members are some of the hardest working students you can come across, they voluntarily dedicate so much time and energy into making their group the best it can be, their sole purpose is providing a valued experience for students and creating strong, reliable communities. Committee members are key to the running of our student groups, organising core activity, social events, fundraisers, and so much more.

But committee members are frequently faced with difficulties and they deserve to feel supported through this.

What are Committee Cafés?

The Student Opportunities team provide annual training sessions for newly elected committees and have weekly drop-in sessions to continue providing support all year round. However, having been a committee member myself for two years, sometimes having a fellow committee member to confide in can make all the difference. The reminder that you’re not alone and others are dealing with exactly the same issues is sometimes all it takes for a committee member to feel re-energised and continue delivering in their role. Not only that, it provides an opportunity for collaboration, innovation, and a wider outreach that can benefit a number of student groups.

I am extremely keen to see these Committee Cafés develop into a safe and open space for committee members to discuss with peers whatever they feel necessary. And whether that is having a rant about a situation they struggled with or sharing tips on best practices, they can support each other through shared experiences as well as building strong inter-group connections.

If you are a committee member and are interested in getting involved in Committee Cafés, check out the information at the bottom of the blog.

If you are interested in becoming a committee member, keep an eye on the Student Group Elections page for nominations to open!
