It's been a very busy month for your academic reps, and VP Education Kate Roberts is excited to congratulate November's Rep of the Month, Sophia Constantopoulos!
It’s almost the end of Term One and festivities are on the horizon. Your Academic Reps have had a hugely busy term – from reducing class sizes, to improving the quality of online resources and signposting students to the Advice Centre. They have been working hard to improve your academic experience. However, in November, there was one rep that stood out!
I would like to congratulate November’s Rep of the Month, Sophia Constantopoulos, Year Two Organismal Biosciences Course Rep, who was nominated for speaking up in lectures and going the extra mile to set up a programme for students to shadow researchers!
I met with Sophia to find out more about her experience.
Why did you want to become a rep?
“I wanted to stand up for underrepresented students, especially students with mental health issues who would otherwise feel lost.”
What have you been up to this term?
“I have been working hard to set up a volunteer programme that links up undergraduate students with top researchers in their field.
“I’ve previously worked with researchers and I know that while it’s incredibly beneficial, it can be daunting reaching out to them, so I wanted to facilitate that with a view to creating a list of academics who’d be happy to have students help them with their projects.
“I’ve also been to my first Staff-Student Committee which went really well, and organised a revision session!”
How do you see being a rep impacting on your future?
“The biggest impact has been on my confidence. I used to be shy, but speaking up in Staff-Student Committee meetings has helped me be more outspoken and outgoing!”
What’s the best thing about being a rep?
“Representing my peers and being a voice for students on my course. My course’s cohort is quite small, so I know everybody who I represent, which means I can see the impact of what I’m doing straight away!
“Getting messages from students thanking me for what I’m doing is also a great feeling and makes me feel appreciated.”
Sophia stood out as a fantastic, engaged and dedicated rep. I am really proud of the work she has done so far and excited to see what else she gets up to this year! A really deserving winner. Congratulations Sophia!
