VP Societies & Sport
A key manifesto aim of mine when running to be your VP Societies & Sport was to ensure student groups received more frequent and informal recognition of their achievements.
My plan was to introduce a weekly #ShoutAboutIt in order to recognise the amazing work done by student groups outside of the annual Colours Ball and Society Awards.
As of next week, #ShoutAboutIt will be up and running!
#ShoutAboutIt is a weekly recognition award given to a student group for a particular event or activity in the upcoming week that benefits their members and embodies the values of RHSU:
They are transparent, honest and fair in what they say and do.
They are bold and not afraid to challenge the status quo.
Their actions and behaviour exceed expectations.
Everything they do has students at the heart of it.
They ensure everything they do is accessible.
The awards will be announced weekly in the RHSU Newsletter sent out every Friday, and it will include a link that will pull through to the event on the group’s webpage. This will allow you to see what else the group gets up to and how you can get involved with them.
Let’s face it, students have enough to do every week, between attending lectures, completing academic work, going to their group activity, and just general student life - trust me, I remember it well…!
#ShoutAboutIt requires no nomination and is automatically awarded once per week. I will take a look through all the approved events submitted to the Student Opportunities Team that are being run in the coming week and choose one which I think best highlights the values of RHSU and also brings huge benefits to the members of the group.
This event will then be highlighted in a box in the newsletter as the upcoming week’s event to shout about!
Student groups put on a variety of fun, creative events and activities every single week, working on inclusive, diverse and accessible ways for their members to have a space outside of academia where they can relax and build long-lasting friendships.
Unfortunately, we don't always get to celebrate the smaller events and activities student groups put on, since the main awards at the end of the year are catered to celebrating all the activity and achievements of student groups. Providing a more regular platform for student group recognition not only encourages more students to get involved in the amazing things our groups have to offer, but also acknowledges groups as they constantly strive to improve their activities and events.
