Getting Involved – How Clubs and Societies can change your life

University is as much about what you do outside of your degree as it is what you do for it. Getting involved in your students’ union can be life-changing.

Joining clubs and societies can be one of the most rewarding things you do during your time here. Not only does it give you the chance to try new things and find new interests, but you will also meet all kinds of people, from different walks of life.

You may even (eventually) find yourself one day helping to run your club or society of choice. You’ll end up learning skills and gaining experience that make all the difference to your CV.

You may find that you have built up experience in managing a team or event organisation, skills you never thought you would use during your time here. All this helps to make you more employable when the inevitable job search comes.

But getting involved isn’t just a great benefit to yourself. It’s the satisfaction you’ll get from being able to improve other students’ lives. It might be through getting another student to join your club or society, and see them striking up new friendships. Or it might be that legendary event night you helped to put on, that everyone will remember for a long time to come and you know you were a big part of it.

Clubs and societies make up a big part of the university experience. They allow students with shared interests to come together, share their passion and create unique experiences. It’s one of the best things you can do during your time here.
