A few of you have already contacted us asking about University Challenge and you’ll be pleased to hear that Royal Holloway will be entering this year and we are now taking applications online!

For those of you that haven’t already heard of it, University Challenge is a quiz show, hosted by the infamous Jeremy Paxman, that allows universities to fight to the death using only their knowledge and intellect. The show started in 1962 and has become a prestigious event in the higher education sphere. Each institution enters one team, who then battle it out round by round, leaving just one to be crowned the winner.

Oxford and Cambridge colleges take University Challenge particularly seriously and the competition gets extremely heated with students supporting their teams from the audience and tensely watching from home.

That said, it’s also a really great experience, all students are encouraged to get involved or contact us if you have more questions. The selection process will be fun and friendly and if you are torn on whether to apply we’d recommend giving it a go!

Royal Holloway has previously made it through the first few live rounds but this year we want to step it up a notch and reclaim our reputation. We are a small university but we have excellent team spirit and determination and our students are definitely up to challenging other groups from across the UK to prove our worth and take them down a peg!

We are looking for as many enthusiastic students as possible, who are willing to give it a go and represent our university. This year filming for the show will take place in Liverpool, with transport and costs provided.

If you think you’ve got what it takes, complete the short set of questions here. We’ll then contact successful applicants and ask you to attend a short written test at the Students’ Union on Friday 11 November between 7-8pm, following this we will hold heats to find the five strongest people to make up our Royal Holloway team.

You can watch some old episodes of the show here to get a bit more of a feel for it or just to relive the excitement.
