We are Royal Holloway Film Society.

Create. Watch. Love.

About us

The Royal Holloway Film Society is an institution for anybody and everybody, but especially those students with a passion for film.

Throughout the year we hope to help members produce a multitude of short films, we'll be teaching members how to use equipment, and we'll be hosting speaker events. As well as this, we host a number of different social events such as SU events, awards ceremony viewing parties (the Oscars, Baftas, and Golden Globes), cinema trips, and casual outings. This year, we also plan to colaborate with a variety of different socities and take part in the annual Rhoscars (a chance for you to win awards for what you did in the year. For those interested in making films in their spare time, we can loan production equipment for free to members. In addition to this, we hold discussions/casual pub events after every film screening we hold where we can freely discuss the film we just watched (and any other films you'd love to talk about)!

Wherever your interests lie, we are first and foremost a place to make new friends, make films, and of course, have fun!

Membership

This year, we will be delivering out full year membership for just £10.

By purchasing a membership for Film Society you will be able to attend all of our production meetings, our film viewings both online and on campus, our awards nights, all socials, and all other events that we host. Keep in mind for some of these events, such as guest speaker events, there may be small attendance fees as well.

You’ll get access to our film equipment to shoot personal projects, as well as having the opportunity to be a part of the short films we wish to make over the coming terms and our regular filmmaking challenges. Your membership fee goes towards maintaining and improving our film equipment, and towards the organisation of any and all events.

At the end of the year we hold our very own film festival, where we'll have categories and awards for a variety of films and production roles, where any member and even student of Royal Holloway can make their own film and compete in our festival.

As a member, you’ll get the opportunity to meet a lot of like-minded and dedicated individuals with a passion for both watching and making films.

Events and Activities

Over the course of the year we host a wide number of events.

  • Production of a multitude of short films, and these can vary from 5-10 minute cinematic shorts, to vine/tiktok style videos. Occasionally, we'll set out certain challenges and conditions to make the process a bit more interesting.
  • Lessons about how to use industry-standard film equipment
  • Speaker events, where industry professionals and RH Media Arts lecturers come to talk about their experiences creating films. We strive to get professionals who work in different departments.
  • Social events such as SU events like Pop!, Flawless and CIYS (Come in your socs), as well as more relaxed pub socials and screenings (with a bangin' popcorn machine to boot).
  • Cinema and festival trips in area and London
  • A big hit last year were our awards ceremony viewing parties, where we watch together ceremonies such as the Oscars, Baftas, and Golden Globes
  • ROHO Film Festival - screening of all films made by Royal Holloway students

Hopefully, this year will be as Covid-free as possible, and we'll be able to host all events in person. Please keep an eye on all of our social media to keep up to date with all the stuff we host.

We can't wait to meet you.
