Welcome to the SU’s Black History Month campaign! The theme of BHM 2022 is ‘Time for Change: Actions not Words’ so we've teamed up with the African-Caribbean Society (ACS) to organise a ton of events and different ways to get involved. Highlights include a careers event on how to keep up a successful side hustle, a student showcase from ACS, a talk from activist and anti-racism strategist, Maia Thomas, a ‘Celebrating Black Music’ Community Hour from Insanity Radio 103.2FM (where we’re taking requests from you) and so much more. Whether you prefer listening to DJ Cuppy or eating some treats from a charity bake sale, there’ll be something going on that’s for you. Check out the links below and see you there!

Over the course of Black History Month, we'll be showcasing the work of black students and we want you to get involved! Whether you run a business, write poetry, create pieces of art, love social media, or would be up for telling us about your story - get in touch! An Audience with I. Stephanie Boyce: 5th October; Online; In 2021, I. Stephanie Boyce made history by becoming the first black (and person of colour) President of the Law Society of England and Wales. Join us as we celebrate Stephanie’s tenure and achievements, and discuss the future of legal training.

Flawless Black History Month ft. Hardy Caprio & Cuppy: 5th October; Union Venue; Your weekly dose of RnB and Hip-Hop beats is back as we celebrate Black History Month with special guests Cuppy and Hardy Caprio!

Afrobeats vs. Bashment ft. ACS: 7th October; Medicine; Celebrating all things Afrobeats and Bashment, get ready for the best vibes and classic anthems all night long in collaboration with African-Caribbean Society.

Beyond Black Panther: Black Superpowers and Afrofuturism: 11th October; Online; Look no further for an entertaining conversation on the historical representation of Black superheroes and heroines, how they were created, and their impact on stereotypical perceptions of Black people in the media.

BHM 2022: The Life of Music Trailblazer Sonny Roberts: 13th October; 108 Ladbroke Grove London W11 1PZ; Part of a special programme of events by Libraries and Archives, join Cleon Roberts for a talk on the life of her father, trailblazing music producer and pioneer, Sonny Roberts.

Working 9-5 With a Dream: 18th October; EWD 1-04; Juggling a passion project alongside your day job isn't easy! Join What Matters CIC for a workshop that will share strategies on how to not compromise your time in the workplace and give you helpful tips on growing your business.

ACS Rep Your Flag: 18th October; Medicine; Continuing Black History Month with a bang, come and rep your country at one of the best ACS nights of the year! Listen out for tunes across the diaspora, invite all your friends and look forward to a great night with the best music.

ACS presents: Nineties and Noughties: 20th October; Union Venue; We're ending Black History Month with a huge throwback! Look forward to all the old-school classics from the 90s and 00s, including your favourite RnB and Hip-Hop tunes, with a touch of the current hits! Don't miss out!

An Evening with Anti-Racism Activist, Maia Thomas: 24th October; Shilling Lecture Theatre; Join Maia Thomas for a talk and Q&A as she shares her experience as a young black woman in the southwest, touching on the barriers she faced and how she became a leading EDI expert and anti-racism activist.

Market Day ft. Foy African Cuisine: 25th October; Union Plaza, Students' Union; It's Market Day every Tuesday at the SU - stock up on fruit and veg at our indoor market and grab a tasty hot lunch from one of our international food stalls on the Union Plaza, including a special Afro-Caribbean stall for Black History Month.

Insanity Community Hour: Celebrating Black Music: 26th October; Online; Tune into Insanity Radio 103.2FM to listen to top tracks by black artists that have been requested by you in this special broadcast for Black History Month!

Hip-Hop Hallo Eve: 28th October; Medicine; Pop by to bop to your favourite hip-hop beats, and take control of the playlist over free pizza for our last Black History Month celebration.
