Over the past 24 hours, a number of students have contacted me regarding the abhorrent racist abuse that has been sent from an account purportedly belonging to a Royal Holloway student.
The College are aware of the situation, have contacted the student in question, and will now be following their disciplinary procedure. While they are doing this, they cannot comment further on the matter. I understand that this may be frustrating and some of you want to see immediate action, but the formal disciplinary process must be followed in order to investigate the matter and reach an appropriate outcome. As always, any complaints should be directed to the College via their complaints procedure.
I'd like to thank everyone who has raised concerns with me regarding this issue. Tackling racism and supporting our black students is of paramount importance to everyone at the Students' Union, and we are dedicated and determined to resolve ongoing issues at Royal Holloway. Much of this work is being driven by the recommendations from our BAME Inclusive Student Experience Student Voice Report.
Our Advice Centre is currently closed until 4 January but if you have been affected by these events or require any immediate support, Student Advisory & Wellbeing services remain open and accessible during the Christmas break. From 24 December 2020 to 4 January 2021, all queries should be diverted to the Supporting You at Royal Holloway mailbox as this will be checked daily whilst staff are taking a break over Christmas. If you would prefer to report an incident anonymously then please refer to the RH BeHeard reporting platform
Urgent or emergency concerns can be supported by the crisis and emergency services detailed on the intranet or can be raised with the campus security team on 01784 443063. Their number is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
